Would you like to get involved in the first pay-what-you-feel cafe in South London, run by the Brixton Pound? We’re looking for volunteers to help out on weekday afternoons or weekends – be part of a unique local community project!
The B£ Cafe was set up in July 2016 at 77 Atlantic Road. From the start, it was operating on a pay-what-you-feel basis: meaning customers could decide how much they want to pay for their food and drink. This system means all customers have an opportunity to be generous, or have an affordable experience.
We have partnered up with local organisations and businesses to source the Cafe’s food and drink from local surplus – perfectly edible food that would otherwise be wasted – and turn it into delicious and healthy meals.
The Cafe has also become an art space, hosting exhibitions and shows by local artists, as well as plenty of other community events.
As with all our initiatives the cafe is a not-for-profit, with all revenue supporting the local community via the Brixton Fund.
Would you like to volunteer some of your time to the B£ Cafe? We are looking particularly for people available during afternoons and weekends who could help with preparing food and drinks, serving customers, and telling them more about the B£. Cafe experience would be a plus, but we provide full training + travel and childcare expenses if you need them.
If you can’t make it on the evening but would still be interested in getting involved, drop us an email at email@example.com or come by the Cafe for a chat (opening hours are Mon 8am-5:30pm, Tue-Fri 8am-6pm, Sat 9am-6pm, Sun 10am-5pm).
Please spread the word among your friends and networks!
Cast your mind back to the start of the year. We said it was going to be the year of the Bonus – we weren’t lying!
The Brixton Bonus is Brixton’s new community prize draw. The idea is simple: tickets cost £1 (or B£1) and are available to anyone. Each month the lucky winner takes home to B£1000 to spend in your businesses, with another B£100 handed out to runners up.
The remainder of the revenue will go to the Brixton Fund (our new micro-grants scheme with three focuses: local employment, social justice and community benefit), and contribute to the Brixton Pound‘s costs.
Together the Brixton Bonus and Brixton Fund will:
Create a new angle for people and businesses to engage with the currency, and the local enterprise and community it supports
Generate funds for valuable local projects, enabling individuals and businesses to contribute to important gras roots work
Create a splash – this is a new take on the idea of local lotteries, and will be one more reason for people to visit and spend local in Brixton
Strengthen the Brixton Pound – helping us continue our work building connections and supporting local independents in Brixton.
To give it a massive push in the run up to the launch in the next couple of months we’re looking for some enthusiastic B£ volunteers, with a few hours to spare, to help us:
Engage local employers
Distribute marketing material
Assist our comms manager
Help out with our launch event
If you’re keen on the B£ and the Brixton Bonus, or just want to be involved in an exciting new local project with the right values, then please click here to let us know. We’d love to have you!
There are loads of ways that you can help the B£ as well as spending it. We are hosting a very informal meeting on Thursday 3rd June for anyone keen to join the team. We will talk a little about the B£’s plans and activities and then there will be an opportunity to have a chat and discuss ways of getting involved.
Over the summer… There are loads of festivals and community events which we are looking to participate in, to help spread the word, increase B£ circulation, and generally make the B£ louder and more visible. Perhaps you could help us with this?
Here are a few different ways that we need help. Get in touch if you think you’re the one for the job!
1) Processing collectors’ packs – online and Ebay orders
2) Saturday outreach – visiting business supporters ensuring they have all necessary communication material; also help with staffing an info stall outside KFC between 11:00-15:00hrs
3) Thursdays drop-in session at the community shop – to help with visitors’ enquiries between 18:00-22:00hrs
4) Producing communication material e.g. A4 posters for businesses
5) Translation of our user guide into community languages e.g. Yoruba, French, Polish
6) Helping during events such as the Lambeth County Show, Brixton Splash, etc.
The Community Shop is in Granville Arcade (entrance from Coldharbour Lane, past the Dogstar and immediately on the left past the railway bridge). The shop is the third unit on the left hand side.
Come for a cup of tea and to find out in more detail how you can get involved.
