Supporting local art and artists

We are offering our converted basement as short-term, dedicated studio space for individuals or groups who are excited by the prospect of being part of a wider community and bringing their art outside of the studio too. The space is below our cafe, which is run on a pay-what-you-feel basis and serves food generated from local surplus.

Over and above the space, we offer the opportunity to embed yourself within the wider community of the cafe and the Brixton Pound. Featuring David Bowie and with guest designs by Jeremy Deller and Fraser Muggeridge studio, the artistic life of Brixton has always been part of the Brixton Pound’s character and we are looking to support the community of artists further through this initiative.

This opportunity is thus best suited to an artist whose practice is rooted in community engagement, curation or education - particularly if you are local or if your art explores issues around money, finance and economics.

Brixton Pound Studios

The studios are available to use as one of two 200sqft units or as a single 400sqft studio. We are looking for residencies of between 1-3 months.

As part of the residency we would look for a concrete additional engagement, but are flexible on the form this takes. Whether working in the cafe for a couple of hours, running community workshops, art outreach events or other support to the organisation, for example design or website development, we welcome ideas that are more imaginative!

We are keen that financial constraints should not limit applications so would be willing to discuss a partial exchange of rent for working in the cafe for an extended period.

About the Brixton Pound

Established in 2009, the Brixton Pound launches and runs creative, participatory projects that reimagine what urban life can be like. The best known of these, the Brixton Pound currency, is accepted in over 200 businesses and regularly features in national and international media as pioneering the future of local economic transactions. It also runs the Brixton Bonus community lottery scheme, and the Brixton Fund, a grants programme that provides funding to grassroots groups and individuals wanting to create positive change in the area. In 2016 it opened the Brixton Pound Cafe, the first pay-what-you-feel cafe in South London and one which runs entirely on surplus and donated food items, and Brixton Pound Studios, an affordable space for artists to reside and showcase their work.
