#4 They look so cool
Even the most staunch royalist has to admit that Lizzie II loses out in the cool stakes to the likes of David Bowie (B£10), and Luol Deng (B£5). The decision over who to place on the notes was voted on by Brixton residents, which were then designed by local artists. They look great in cash registers, and on your wall at home too – buy our collector packs here.
Want to meet to B£ designers? It’s Brixton Design Week (part of London Design Festival) so to celebrate Brixton’s iconic design culture we’re having a party on Thursday 18 September, from 7pm at Grow:Brixton (where the ice rink used to be on Pope’s Road, opposite Brixton Rec). Come find out more about our cool note designs, as well as some of our upcoming design work themed around the idea of ‘Brixton Independents.’ Plus DJs, live music, talks, art displays, drinks, and everyone connected with the Brixton Pound so far – users, business owners, founders, staff and designers. We look forward to seeing you there!
The Brixton Pound team were out en force on Saturday 11th June, ready to take on the elements, to take part in the Open Square weekend event, organised by the Brixton Society.
The theme of the Saturday event was plants, gardening and growing – so we joined a number of local growers displaying their green and colourful wares on the square, such as the most gorgeous strawberries from the Sunday Farmers Market!
The day was an opportunity to be out talking to people, mingling with local growers and organisations, and generally encouraging the support of local sourcing, trade and production. Thanks to all who stopped by and for the many words of encouragement. Thanks to all the volunteers on the day, and last but not least thanks to Stuart the Watchman (Watch repairer extraordinaire, on Pope’s Road) for lending us his extremely cute barrow – the envy of many a trader on the day.
Look out for the B£ team next at the Brixton Windmill event on 10th July, from 1pm to 5pm in Windmill Gardens. Lots activities are in store for families and children, with wind power the theme of this year’s event.
