About the B£ e-currency

The B£ e-currency is the UK’s first local e-currency pilot.  The B£e-currency uses the Monea ICT platform, which is a partnership between  nef (the new economics foundation), the Transition Network and QOIN, a Dutch complementary currency foundation. Support for the B£e pilot has come from Lambeth Council and philanthropic trusts.  Community currencies using Monea will also be piloted in two other areas in the UK and in three areas in Holland over the next 12 months.

Monea use the Cyclos ICT platform.  Cyclos is a tried and tested system for local currencies, including timebanking and LETS as well as legal tender-backed currency systems.  The ICT platform has been developed over a ten-year period by the Dutch NGO the Social Trade Organisation – and the current version is 3.5.6.   It is currently being used by the Uruguayan government for a country-wide complementary currency scheme and is also used by banks and municipalities in Austria for local currencies.   All text messages are security encoded using SSL technology.
