Owner of Sitifis Cafe Noureddine Lalmi was photographed by Lambeth Life for an article about the Brixton Pound reusable cup scheme. Sitifis is just one of many cafes and eateries in Brixton offering a discount to customers using the cup. Get hold of yours now from participating businesses for B£6 or £6.50 and help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. See this earlier post for more details.

The Brixton Pound also featured in Friday’s Evening Standard. Brixton Village trader Mpho McKenzie said the Brixton Pound had helped boost local trade. Read the article in full here.

Have a crafty Christmas

On Saturday 11th December Crafty Fox Pop Up Market is coming to Brixton. The market is being held in the Dogstar pub on Coldharbour Lane, 11am-6pm. There will be over 30 stalls selling handmade and vintage items as well as craft workshops, live music and, inevitably, drinks.

Stallholders will be accepting Brixton £s on the day so it’s a great opportunity to pick up the last (or, in my case, the first) of your Christmas presents. Shopping in the Dogstar – it’s got to be less stressful than Oxford Street!

On that note, we’d love to hear from anyone who’s decided to buy all their Christmas presents using Brixton Pounds. Simon Woolf did it last year and you can watch a video of him Christmas shopping here.

A Brixton Birthday

To all who came to our first birthday party last week thank you and we hope you had as much fun as we did. It’s party time (almost)

Get out your dancing shoes. Dust down your party frock. There’s just one day to go before the big birthday! I hope you’re as excited as we are.

The celebrations will be kicking off from 6.30pm this Thursday and the Mayor of Lambeth has just confirmed that he will be cutting our birthday cake at 6.45pm so make sure you get there early. Restaurants will be open until 10pm and The Brick Box will be turning into Brixton Village’s first ever bar for the night. There will be entertainment all evening from live music to improv theatre. If you don’t have any Brixton Pounds, fear not, as some of our volunteers will be exchanging on the night. Get in the festive spirit by wearing something blue to show your support for the Brixton Pound.

Brixton Village will be closing at 10pm but the fun doesn’t stop there. Join us at the White Horse for some serious afterpartying into the early hours…

Comedian and quizmaster Trevor Lock

We are delighted to announce that our very first fundraising event at Olley’s Fish Experience raised a whopping £805 for the B£!!

So a big thanks to everyone who came down! It was a fantastic night with lovely food, live sea shanties and a Brixton-themed quiz that could put any Mastermind to shame. Of course we couldn’t have done it without the generous help of the businesses and individuals who support the Brixton Pound so (in no particular order) a tremendous thank you to:

The wonderful Harry at Olley’s Fish Experience for being such a generous host, and donating the food and the venue for the night.

The White Horse, Bellantoni’s, Agile Rabbit, Healthy Eaters, Amaru Hemp and Ossie’s Fresh Ginger for providing prizes for the worthy winners of the quiz and our raffle, and the Brixton Society for contributing material to our quiz.

Buenos dias Brixton!

Brixton Pound volunteer, Myfanwy Taylor will be appearing on Latin American radio station Aculco this Saturday. Myfanwy will be on Todas Las Voces Todas discussing how the Brixton Pound has fared in its first year. The show will be on air 11am – 1pm.

Portuguese is the third mostly widely spoken language in Brixton and the Latin American community has a huge cultural influence on the area. You can spend the Brixton Pound with many Latin American businesses including Restaurant la Cabana in Brixton Village and A&C Continental Grocers on Atlantic Road.

A night out with the Brixton Pound

The Brixton Pound is proud (and excited and a bit wobbly at the knees) to announce that we will be holding our first fundraising dinner on the 24th August. The venue is Olley’s Fish Experience in Herne Hill, a local institution and purveyors of the finest fish and chips in South London. And acting as host and compere will be comedian and Brixtonian Trevor Lock.

The evening will start with a champagne reception, followed by a two course meal and entertainment, including a Brixton Pound quiz to test your local knowledge! Join us and show your support for the Brixton Pound and the local community. Tickets are £25 per person – available in advance only. All proceeds will go to the Brixton Pound project. Brixton Splash this weekend

Another weekend, another reason to stay in Brixton. This Sunday it’s the best street party in London – Brixton Splash! Now in its fifth year, Splash began as a celebration of how far Brixton has come since the 1981 riots and is fast becoming a local institution. This year the theme is ‘United C0lours of Brixton’ with an emphasis on the Windrush generation and the rich culture and heritage of Brixton.

There will be singing, dancing, eating, drinking. What more do you need? Oh yes, that Brixton staple… A MASSIVE sound system!

The Brixton Pound group will be manning a stall in the craft market in St Matthew’s Peace Gardens. We’ll be exchanging Sterling for B£s on the day so make sure you grab hold of some as plenty of stalls will be accepting them. Look out for our street volunteers too (you’ll know them by their B£ badges). They are founts of knowledge and will be able to answer any questions you might have about the B£!
