B£ ELECTRONIC CURRENCY (Pay by Text) – SUMMARY*

The UK first local e-currency pilot, which is part of a larger project to develop a platform to trade local currencies.

Launched: 29th September 2011

Aim: Pay by Text seeks to facilitate transactions and increase their value, and to incentivise users’ behaviour change towards supporting independent businesses.

Geographical spread: Brixton covered markets, Brixton Town Centre, Herne Hill

Circulation to date: B£ 4,000

Incentive: 10% bonus automatically added every time users credit their account

Registration process: Online form

Partners: Lambeth Council, new economics foundation, monea, Transition Town Brixton.
